Scrolling down my timeline, I came across a picture of Ms. Kendall Jenner. I was in complete shock when I read the caption. “Kendall looking stunning as she rocks see-through shirt, is this the new trend?” Needless to say, I couldn’t help but think ‘wow, seriously? A new trend? Walking around naked!” Adam and Eve understood what being ‘naked’ meant and how showing their bodies was harmful, which is why when their eyes were opened and they realized they were naked they sewed fig leaves together and made coverings for themselves [Genesis 3:7] Being naked in public, is NOT a new trend. Don’t be fooled.
The way we were raised creates our values, norms and views of self-respect. For example, Kendall is part of the biggest reality t.v family in history. If mom, Kris, never explained how walking outside without a bra is inappropriate, than who will tell her otherwise? One time, I tried leaving my house to go to a party, wearing a crop top and some bell bottoms (old school, I know lol) and my mom just gave me “the look” and I knew I had to change. My mother taught me that certain clothes will bring certain attention, and as a young girl I need to carry myself in a certain light. She explained the significance in wearing a bra and how I should always have one on. Although, my mom may have seemed a bit judgmental with her bluntness “Do you want to look like a hoe! Then go change” I see the value in her wise words. A value that must be taught to this Generation and the ones to come.
With sisters like Kim known for her infamous tape, it’s easily understandable how this choice of outfit could be acceptable within her family. She may have gotten reinforcements such as “you go girl” or “That is super cute” to “You got nipple rings for a reason, let the world know” I don’t know? But whoever encouraged her to leave the house like this, takes just as much blame as she does for wearing it. Her family does a lot of over the top things, and they do so, to gain the world’s attention and society feeds into it. They may desire to be on covers, t.v and talked about (like what I’m doing now, smh.) but the truth is, we should not live to please the world.
“Am I now trying to win the approval of human beings, or of God? Or am I trying to please people? If I were still trying to please people, I would not be a servant of Christ” – Genesis 1:10
The truth is, this is not cute. At all. It’s actually sad to me. Young girls look up to these Kardashians, and they themselves are creating trends that lead to low self-esteem and unrealistic expectations. Women are going to extreme levels to ‘look like a Kardashian’ when in reality, the Kardashians don’t even look like Kardashians. Plastic surgery, make-up, clothing stylists, public relations teams, private chefs and personal trainers all helped create the ‘Kardashian look.’ To the average person, it would be almost impossible to achieve this look without any outside help.
My goal is to teach young girls right from wrong. Kendall is a beautiful girl, but her clothes, attract ugly attention. As women, we need to be aware of the energy we put out into the universe. It is okay to be sexy, but walking around naked, is a bit much. If we put everything out on the table, what more could we bring? If you meet a boy, who is only attracted to your body, how long will the relationship lasts? As soon as he gets what he wants, he’s out! Like Ciara once said, “Looking for the goodies, Keep on lookin’ ’cause they stay in the jar” Your goodies are yours! Everyone wants the newest iphone, until everyone has it and a new one is coming out. You may get the attention for a short time, but eventually if everyone gets a piece, what value do you still hold? Don’t lose your value. You can be cute and sexy, dressed and covered.
“Do not let your adorning be external—the braiding of hair and the putting on of gold jewelry, or the clothing you wear” – 1 Peter 3:3
Young girls, be mindful of the clothes you wear. Focus on your inner self, rather than your appearance. Compliments do not create happiness. It starts within. Understand that it is better to get no attention, than the wrong attention. Do not wear clothes that reveal your body and show off to people who are undeserving. Your body is your temple. It is God-given. You are responsible of taking care of your body, and how it’s perceived. The clothes that we wear reflect the person we are. How do you want to see you as? Classy? Sophisticated? or Easy? Loose? When people see women wearing clothes such as this Kendall outfit, no matter how you feel, the image screams derogatory words.
You can’t dress like a slut, and not expect to be called one.
Let me make this clear, this post is not meant to bash Kendall Jenner, in fact, she is my favorite Kardashian. However, this post is created to bring light to what society has created as the ‘norm.’ In her life this may be the norm, but in God’s eyes, it is not. It is easy to get caught up with worldly things and focus on worldly opinions. SmileWithFaith is here to remind you that, God’s opinion is the only one that matters. It is nice for others to like us, but not at the cost of our dignity by revealing our bodies. There are two types of girls in this world, the Kendall’s and the You’s. Which do you want to be?
“Likewise also that women should adorn themselves in respectable apparel, with modesty and self-control, not with braided hair and gold or pearls or costly attire, but with what is proper for women who profess godliness—with good works” – 1 Timothy 2:9-10
