Gluttony

According to the Center For Disease Control and Prevention, more than one-third (36.5%) of U.S. adults have obesity. Due to the immediacy and convenience of fast food, these companies are a multi-billion dollar industry. Over the past decade, society has grown to not only want more but crave more. Almost every fast-food chain has a super-size option, leading Americans to intake more sugar, fats and carbohydrates. These fatty foods contain addictive qualities that keeps people coming back for more. It is no surprise that these corporations profit off of poisoning it’s customers but are these organization really to blame?

Gluttony is the excessive indulgence of eating or drinking. Gluttony and greed are a dangerous duo. They work together to keep people from feeling satisfied which can lead to deadly consequences. Overeating leads to obesity and obesity leads to death. The problem with greed is that a person is never content with what they have. They never feel full after a meal. Their end is destruction, their god is their belly, and they glory in their shame, with minds set on earthly things [Philippians 3:19]. When you focus on feeding the desires of the flesh, you lack the focus of feeding The Spirit.

“Be not among drunkards or among gluttonous eaters of meat, for the drunkard and the glutton will come to poverty, and slumber will clothe them with rags” – Proverbs 23:20-21

Prophets like Elijah and Moses are proof that ‘Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God [Matthew 4:4].’ The Human Body does not need food to live, it needs the word of God. Jesus showed the truth in this when he fasted for 40 days and 40 nights. So, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God [1 Corinthians 10:31]. The idea of wanting more than you need is a trend that is leading many to destruction. A heart of gluttony will never be content.

Believers, you must be aware when you have enough. When you take more than you need, you are taking away from someone in need. If you have found honey, eat only enough for you, lest you have your fill of it and vomit it [Proverbs 25:6]. When your stomach is full the mind can say ‘keep eating’ and if you are not aware of this disconnect, gluttony may arise. Be mindful of The Spirit and make conscious decisions to know when enough is enough.

“Therefore I tell you, do not be anxious about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink, nor about your body, what you will put on. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothing? 26 Look at the birds of the air: they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value than they? 27 And which of you by being anxious can add a single hour to his span of life?” –Matthew 6:25-27
