“How you have fallen from heaven, morning star, son of the dawn! You have been cast down to the earth, you who once laid low the nations!” – Isaiah 14:12
The term “fallen angel” does not appear in the Bible, but it is used for angels who have sinned. “For God did not spare even the angels who sinned. He threw them into hell, in gloomy pits of darkness, where they are being held until the day of judgment [2 Peter 2:4].” Fallen angels are Heaven’s rejects, those who were kicked out due to bad behavior. They wanted to break rules and not follow them. They turned to sin instead of turning to God, and now they seek to lead others down the wrong path.
Satan is a fallen angel and once lived in God’s Kingdom. God named him Lucifer which means ‘morning star’, because he was one of the most beautiful angels in heaven. Satan was once holy, until the day he turned from God to try to become God. Satan was casted down to earth and banished from Heaven for eternity with other fallen angels. “Your heart was proud because of your beauty; you corrupted your wisdom for the sake of your splendor. I cast you to the ground; I exposed you before kings, to feast their eyes on you [Ezekiel 28:17].” Satan’s heart became too proud and his looks got the best of him. He became cocky and was determined to acquire the same powers as God. Satan allowed his jealousy to corrupt his wisdom. Therefore he was no longer allowed in Heaven and now tries to keep others out of heaven too. Misery loves company and Satan is as miserable as it gets.
“I Saw Satan fall from heaven like lightening! Look, I have given you authority over all the power of the enemy, and you can walk among snakes and scorpions and crush them. Nothing will injure you. But don’t rejoice because evil Spirit obey you; rejoice because your names are registered in heaven.” –Luke 10:18-20
In Luke, Jesus recounts when he saw Satan casted out of Heaven. This let’s us know Satan’s history of where He came from and why the earth is Satan’s playground. Satan knows that he is fighting a losing battle because victory has already been won through Christ, yet he holds on to evil and attempts to bring others down with him. His mission is to take as many souls as he can before the final day of judgment. The Devil’s goal is to tempt us into sinning. He wants to hurt God by having God’s own creation turn against him and live in sin rather than righteousness. Satan is the king of manipulators and his words are lies. He is the father of lies and there is no truth in him. The enemy comes in many disguises, he wants to attract our eyes and ears to his wickedness to keep us from being saved for eternity. “And no wonder, for even Satan disguises himself as an angel of light [2 Corinthians 11:14].”
Then there was war in heaven. Michael and his angels fought against the dragon and his angels. And the dragon lost the battle, and he and his angels were forced out of heaven. This great dragon – the ancient serpent called the devil, or Satan, the one deceiving the whole world – was thrown down to the earth with all his angels.” – Revelation 12:7
