Question:If God is real why doesn’t God audibly or visibly reveal God’s himself to us?
“But you may not look directly at my face, for no one may see me and live” -Exodus 33:20
This question was one they kept me from believing in God myself. I was a logical and scientific thinker that needed proof, data and evidence! In order for me to believe in God, I needed to see or hear from God. But, the more I grew in faith and understanding of The lord, I found the answer to this question. The old testament documents many personal encounters that people have experienced of seeing or hearing from God himself. In Exodus chapter 33, we read about How Moses asked “Then show me your glorious presence.” and God replied “I will make all my goodness pass before you, and I will call out my name, The Lord, before you. For I will show mercy to anyone I choose and I will show compassion to anyone I choose.”
The Lord continued “Look, stand near me on this rock. As my glorious presence passes by, I will hide you in the crevice of the rock and cover you with my hand until I have passed by. Then I will remove my hand and let you see me from behind. But my face will not be seen.” This is an amazing story! God is so holy that if we were too see him, we would die instantly, but God found a way to carefully show just a small portion of himself to Moses, who had favor with The Lord. The reason why we would die if we seen Him, is because we are sinful and His holiness destroys sin.
Throughout the Old testament we read many other ways that God revealed himself to those who had faith. From speaking out of the sky after Jesus was baptized (And a voice from heaven said, “This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased – Matthew 3:17) to speaking through a burning bush [Exodus 3:2] God made his presence known and felt both audibly and visibly. However, we no longer live in those times, we now live under the blood of Christ. Since, we have Jesus who is Lord and Savior, God know longer needs to reveal himself like the old days, because He has revealed all we need to know through His Son.
When we know Jesus, we know God.
